Barbara Louise ‘Babs’ McLane

SALISBURY — Barbara Louise “Babs” McLane, 85, died Sept. 13, 2016, at her home. 

Babs was born June 17, 1931, in Salisbury at her family home on Undermountain Road, a daughter of the late Elizabeth (Ball) and Marshall McLane.

Babs graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1948. She then received her nursing degree from the Henry W. Bishop Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield, Mass., in 1952. In 1968, Babs earned her B.A. from the University of Hartford.

Babs was an RN and took care of people her whole life. 

She lived a life filled with service, good humor and encouragement to her friends. She served in the U.S. Army Reserves and held the rank of 1st lieutenant. 

Her early career began at Hartford Hospital as an operating room nurse; she eventually became the supervisor of that department. Babs moved back to Salisbury to continue nursing at Sharon Hospital from the late 1960s to 1983. 

Babs was a member of the Riga clan on Mount Riga for 50 years. She then moved to a cottage at Noble Horizons. She was an active participant in the activities at Noble. She was always ready to entertain and be entertained. She also loved her time as a volunteer at Salisbury Central School working with the students. 

Babs was predeceased by her companion, Marion Roy; and her siblings, Mary, Marshall Jr. and Kay Casey. 

She is survived by her sister, Margaret; her brothers, Roderick and Michael; and many nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Babsie. 

Babs is also survived by her beloved dog, Felix, her cat, Lulu, and her many Salisbury and Noble friends.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Community Room at Noble Horizon from 2 to 4 p.m. 

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

SALISBURY — Joseph Robert Meehan the 2nd,photographer, college professor and nearly 50 year resident of Salisbury, passed away peacefully at Noble Horizon on June 17, 2025. He was 83.

He was the son of Joseph Meehan the 1st and his mother, Anna Burawa of Levittown, New York, and sister Joanne, of Montgomery, New York.

On Saturday, June 21, Mort Klaus, longtime Sharon resident, hosted 250 enthusiastic supporters of Northwest Corner’s beloved nonprofit, Chore Service at his stunning 175-acre property. Chore Service provides essential non-medical support to help older adults and those with disabilities maintain their independence and quality of life in their own homes.

Jane MacLaren, Executive Director, and Dolores Perotti, Board President, personally welcomed arriving attendees. The well-stocked bar and enticing hors d’oeuvres table were popular destinations as the crowd waited for the afternoon’s presentations.
