Battle of the Bands

FALLS VILLAGE — Window Box Failures took first place and shared the People’s Choice Award with Starcraft to Pluto (runner up) at the Housatonic Youth Service Bureau’s sixth annual Battle of the Bands, held April 24 at Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

Salisbury Bank & Trust, Harney and Sons Fine Teas, Dr. Robert J. Bird, Kent Wine and Spirit, Morrison Gallery in Kent and the Panini Cafe in Kent sponsored the event, which drew about 300 people to watch and listen to seven garage bands compete for cash prizes. Tickets were $8.

The winners, Window Box Failures (featuring Billy Bunce on guitar/vocals, Steven Bunce on drums/vocals, Mollikate Dione on keyboard/vocals and Mike Rubin on bass), won $500 for first place and split the $300 for the People’s Choice Award with Starcraft to Pluto as they ended up receiving the same applause in decibels (according to an applause meter).

Winning second place and $400 was Starcraft to Pluto, featuring Mike Kenny on lead vocals, Ben Paley on guitar, Dylan Vadakin on drums and Van Daalhuyzen on bass.

Other bands that performed were Hope in the Sky, Lost in the Crowd, Louis Armstrong Theory, 3 and Counting and elgaeb elgae daerps.

This year’s judges included Alex Harney, Damon Osora and Pat Thorney. Sound was done by Graham Stone of Stone Studio and John Christinat was the emcee.

The battle showcased the talents, independent practice and dedication of the Northwest Corner’s garage bands by giving them a venue  and an incentive to never give up. Net proceeds from the event benefit the programs and services of the Housatonic Youth Service Bureau, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth and families in Northwest Connecticut.
