Best of the best of area art

KENT — The Kent Art Association (KAA) opened its President’s Show with a reception on Friday, July 24. The exhibit features 131 pieces from Northwest Corner artists. Works were submitted and a panel of artists decided which would be put on display.

All 131 works were then reviewed by three judges: Lee Bardenheuer, Frank Federico and Plonia Van Der Hoeven Nixon. They decided which would win 14 awards that ranged from $100 to $500.

The Best in Show President’s Award was given to Clayton Buchanan for his pastel, “At the Bar.”

Other awards were as follows:

Michael Abene Award for Jazz Theme, Any Medium: Clayton Buchanan, “The Beat Goes On”

Richards Ochs Memorial Award I for Watercolor: Joan J. Palmer, “Toad”

Sascha Maurer AWS Memorial Award for Watercolor: Doug Leigh, “4th Street Fair”

Spencer Nichols Award for Oil/Acrylic: Keith Davidson, “Water Ballet”

Robert Nisbet Award for Graphics: Carl Chaiet, “So, I Was Out Fishing”

George Laurence Nelson Award for Portrait: Harry Burman, “Carol #2”

Willard Paddock Award for Sculpture: Nancy Steckel, “Ancient Dreams”

F. Luis Mora Award for Pastel: Julie Hopkins, “Morning in Naples”

John T. Mott Award for Marine Painting, Any Medium: Charles Green, “Spring Breakers”

Ridgewood Art Institute Award, Any Medium: Arlene Nadel, “Testing the Waters, triptych”

Pastel Society Award for Pastel: Rachel Gerowe “The Girls”

Richard Ochs Memorial Award II for Watercolor: Patricia Belleci, “Franklin County Winter”

Kent Art Association Award of Excellence, Any Medium: Ruth Newquist, “Chinatown”

The Kent Art Association is located at 21 S. Main St. and is open Thursday to Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The show will remain up until Sept. 7. For more information go to www.kentart.org or call 860-927-3989.

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School’s girls soccer team is headed to the semifinals of the state tournament.

The Mountaineers are the highest seeded team of the four schools remaining in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class S playoff bracket.
