Bomber Matt Beam wins football honor

PINE PLAINS— The Athletics Department of Pine Plains Central School District recently congratulated one of its student athletes, junior Matt Beam, for achieving an All State Honorable Mention for Varsity Football by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Described as “a truly well-rounded athlete both athletically and academically,” Matt Beam has been a key part of the varsity football team’s success over the last two years.

As of this past fall, he began his third year of varsity football. Though he did not start the year as a quarterback on the football team, he excelled once he changed positions after previously playing wide receiver, according to football coach Rob Scott.

“He is a true leader among his peers and one of the hardest working athletes on our football team,” said Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Assistant Principal Rich Silverstein.

As an example of the student’s exemplary leadership skills, Silverstein acknowledged Beam as one of the first athletes to rise to the occasion this year when the school announced the start of its first lacrosse team, despite never having played before.

In addition to his positions on the varsity football team and varsity lacrosse team, Beam currently plays on the varsity basketball team as point guard.

“Matt Beam is a leader on and off the field,” said Head Coach Rob Scott of the Pine Plains Bombers. “I look forward to great things from him in his senior year.”

After completing his academic career at Stissing Mountain High School, Beam plans to continue playing sports while at college, mirroring his sisters who played field hockey during their college careers.
