Booster clubs give athletic teams a lift

WEBUTUCK/PINE PLAINS — Booster Clubs have long been a way for local athletic programs to raise money. Often schools just don’t have the budget to pay for new uniforms or expensive away game travel costs. That’s where the school’s booster club comes in, and both Webutuck and Pine Plains have programs that raise money for their school’s teams.

Pat Giordano is the president of the Pine Plains Bombers Booster Club and has been a member for 10 years. Her children have outgrown the program, but she continues to stay and help out.

“It’s a great program,†she said. “I’ve seen a lot of kids coming into high school who were shy and lacked self-confidence. They’ve gotten involved in various sports programs and  blossomed. It’s great to see these kids really come out of their shell.â€

The Pine Plains Booster Club has a lot of responsibility on its shoulders. Its austerity budget for this year is around $30,000, which includes paying for trophies, scholarships for graduating seniors, officials to referee games, use of fields and transportation for rescheduled away games.

“We’ve got lots of different fundraisers that are going on year-round,†Giordano said. “Of course we have concession stands set up at basketball and football games, in addition to all the special events.â€

Golf tournaments, ATV and 50/50 raffles, as well as events at Applebees restaurant have been in the works.

“Right now we’re getting ready for the Ag Fair,†Giordano said. “We’ll have several fundraisers then, including Kiss the Cow, where students vote for which teacher they most want to kiss a bovine, contests to see how fast you can throw a softball and baseball, as well as fresh pesto and mozzarella on hard rolls for sale.â€

Giordano said that while the booster club has the support of local parents, she is always looking for new recruits.

“We’ve got about 100 students in the booster club and nowhere near that many parents,†she added. “I’d like to see more of a balance in the future.â€

Over at the Webutuck schools, Athletic Director Mike Riddle said that his school’s booster club was a big help in meeting all the extra expenses that weren’t necessarily planned for at the beginning of the year.

“The boys and girls soccer teams went to Oneonta to visit the Soccer Hall of Fame. The booster club paid for the hotel rooms. I contacted them about replacing the banners that were hanging in the high school gym. They’re there if I need individual trophies for awards ceremonies. They’ve been great.â€

The Webutuck Warriors Booster Club is run by Beth Murphy, who is the librarian at the Amenia Elementary School.

“Our No. 1 goal at the booster club is to give graduating athletes college scholarships, although we also supplement other areas as well,†she said.

“Our big event coming up is the Night of Giving, held at the Poughkeepsie Galleria on Nov. 16. Tickets cost $5 and only ticket-holders will be able to enter. The event is running from 6 to 9 p.m. and various discounts will be available from the stores.â€

Riddle was very confident in the way the booster club has been working since Murphy took over this year.

“Since the new president, there’s been greater participation from the parents. In the past, the club has done  a great job of raising money, but I’m not sure they had everything in order as to what the booster club did for the different programs.â€

Parent Joanne Boyd has been “in and out for six years,†she said, but continues to work hard for Warrior athletes.

“In this day and age it really helps out,†Boyd said. “We try to do everything we can, and there has been a core group of people that really make it work each year.â€

“It’s a job where there is always more to do,†Murphy said. “We’re always open to new suggestions and we do a lot to get people interested in learning what we’re there for.â€

Both Webutuck and Pine Plains are looking for new recruits. Occasional Pine Plains Bombers Booster Club meetings are held and anyone is more than welcome to attend. Giordano works at Stissing Mountain High School and any interested parties should contact her at 518-398-7181, ext. 107.

Webutuck Booster Club President Beth Murphy’s preferred method of communication is e-mail and her address is emurphy@webutuckschools.org. Her home phone number is 845-868-7298.

“You know what?†she joked. “I don’t care what time of night they call as long as they’re willing to help out the cause!â€
