Building bridges toward Eagle Scout

FALLS VILLAGE — Trevor Zeiner, 17, of Torrington recently built two bridges and an information kiosk to assist hikers at Great Mountain Forest.

The project is one of the requirements he must complete as he works toward attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He belongs to Boy Scout Troop 44 based out of Goshen, Conn.

The idea for the project came from his father, Jonathan Zeiner. The lumber used to build the bridges and kiosks were cut from trees native to the area.

Twenty people assisted Trevor with his project, including Jody Bronson and Hans Carlson of Great Mountain Forest.

Trevor thanked the businesses that helped sponsor his project. He received material donations from many Torrington stores, such as hardware from Carl’s True Value and Iffland Lumber, and food donations from Carbones, Alfredo’s, Stop & Shop, McDonald’s and Walmart.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
