WINSTED — Winsted Cub Scout Pack 1027 held a can and bottle drive on Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Winsted Fire Station on Prospect Street.
Residents were welcome to drive by and drop cans off to support activities for the Cubs.
“We started doing this last year as a way to raise a little bit of extra money, and it ended up being a service project for the children as well,” Cubmaster Gina Sartirana said at the drive. Local residents were happy to clear out their recyclables in time for the holidays and the boys were very excited to fill their bags.
“It helps us with the expenses that we incur throughout the year to run the program for the boys,” Sartirana said.
The scouts of Pack 1027 have several local activities planned that they will be participating in, including the Pinewood Derby in January.
“We have a really intense program, as far as the different projects that we have,” Sartirana said.
The Cub Scouts have been on camping trips, and engaged in a program called Ultimate Survival Winsted, where they take on 15 different stations, learning skills such as orienteering and tracking.
“It’s a really fun project for them, and it ends up being a crossover ceremony to honor their achievements and all their hard work,” Sartirana said. “We do a lot of community service work, we clean up trails and participate in various programs to help the community out.”
There are five dens within the pack, which are broken up by grades. Den meetings are held weekly, and the whole pack meets once a month, to plan their various programs.
