Carlton J. ‘Cartie’ Ovitt

NORTH CANAAN — Carlton J. “Cartie” Ovitt, 77, of Whitford Court died Sept. 26, 2015, at Sharon Hospital.  He was the husband of Margaret (Parmalee) Ovitt.  

Cartie was born Nov. 13, 1937, in Rhinebeck, N.Y., son of the late Edna Lucy (King) and Ronald Sabin Ovitt.

Cartie worked as a truck driver for Hitchcock Brothers in North Canaan for nearly 40 years.  Never one to slow down, after leaving the trucking company he began working for the town of North Canaan.  

On his days off from the town he could be found mowing and trimming the grounds of Mountain View Cemetery.  Cartie loved gardening, but his passion was masonry work. 

In addition to his wife, Cartie is survived by his four children,  Sherri Ovitt of Torrington, Carla Hitchcock and her husband, Martin, of North Canaan, Lisa Keith and her husband, Glenn, of Goshen and Carlton J. Ovitt II and his girl friend, Cathy Schmitt, of North Canaan; his sisters and brothers, Eleanor Heineman and her husband, Horst, of Newington, Roger Ovitt and his wife, Barbara, of Florida, Raymond Ovitt and his wife, Marie, of Falls Village, Wayne Ovitt of Pittsfield, Mass., Brian Ovitt and his wife, Alice, of Sheffield, Mass., Joy Ovitt Eichstedt of Easton, Mass., Robert Ovitt of Southfield, Mass., and Garry Ovitt and his wife, Cheryl, of Sheffield; nine grandchildren, Corey, Jackie, Sarah, Erica, Carlton, Brittany, Thomas, Travis and Glenna; and four great-grandchildren, Skye, Gus, Zachary and Autumn.  

Cartie was predeceased by his brothers Ronald and Jerry.

A celebration of Cartie’s Life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Couch-Pipa VFW Post 6851, 104 S. Canaan Road, in North Canaan.                                  

Memorial donations may be sent to either the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O Box 178, North Canaan, CT 06018, or the Canaan Fire Company, 4 Main St., North Canaan, CT 06018.  

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Red Sox end season with comeback win

NORTH CANAAN — The Canaan Red Sox ended the season with a thrilling 14-13 win over the Tri-Town Phillies Thursday, June 12.

Canaan trailed for most of the game but kept it close. Ultimately, the Red Sox secured the victory with a final-inning comeback in front of the home crowd at Steve Blass Field.

State Rep. Horn injured in running accident

The day after concluding what has been described as a grueling legislative session, State Rep. Maria Horn (D-64) had a running accident, leaving her with a broken pelvis and collarbone among other more minor bruises and abrasions. Despite the injuries, she is in good spirits and recuperating at home, eager to get back on her feet.

Horn said after spending weeks in the assembly hall, she was eager to get some outdoor exercise in, but perhaps pushed a little too hard too soon. She said she was excited to get a run in on the morning of Friday, June 6, but was still exhausted from her time in Hartford and in the final stretch of recovering from a meniscus repair surgery in December.

Walk-off win sends Pirates to championship

NORTH CANAAN — The Canaan Pirates advanced to the league championship after a comeback victory over the Tri-Town Red Sox Wednesday, June 11.

Down 3-2 with two outs and two on in the bottom of the 6th inning, "Mighty" Milo Ellison stepped up to the plate and launched a fly ball deep to left field. The single brought home Brody Ohler and Sam Hahn for a walk-off Pirates win.
