Carol Virginia Buckley

SHARON — Carol Virginia Buckley, 80, of Newburyport, Mass., passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, after a brief illness.

Carol was born to the late William and Aloise (Steiner) Buckley on Nov. 12, 1938, in New York City. She was the 10th and youngest child of a prominent American political family.

She attended the Noroton School, Convent of the Sacred Heart during her high school years and had an undergraduate degree and master’s in social work from Marymount Manhattan College.

Carol worked part-time as a writer and editor and also as an addiction counselor. She wrote one book, “At the Still Point”(Simon & Schuster, 1996), which is her memoir of her life as the youngest member of the Buckley clan.  

Carol grew up in Sharon and Camden, S.C. She lived in Sharon for many years. In 1993, she moved to Newburyport. 

Carol was quick-witted, generous and kind. She was the best friend that anyone could possibly want and throughout her life, she loved, comforted and assisted many less fortunate than herself. She was a beautiful writer and a good mother. She was a coffee addict.

Carol is survived by five children: her son, Tom Charlton and his partner, Jayne Roepke; her daughter, Anne Charlton and her three children, Hunter, Read and Sarah; her daughter Carol Ehreth, her husband Jeff Ehreth and their three children,  Priscilla, Carol, and Emma; her stepdaughter, Dawn Learsy, and her sons, Otto and Ezra; and her stepson, Serge Learsy, his wife, Lisa, and their two children, Ailish and Conor.  

Carol’s second son, Willam Buckley Charlton, and her son-in-law, Perry Stone, predeceased her. 

Arrangements to be made at a later date and are under the direction of the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home in Newburyport.

Cornwall Consolidated School seventh graders Skylar Brown, Izabella Coppola, Halley Villa, Willow Berry, Claire Barbosa, Willa Lesch, Vivianne DiRocco and Franco Aburto presented a group research project on the life of Naomi Freeman Wednesday, April 23. Jahana Hayes, D-Conn., John Mills, president of Alex Breanne Corporation, Cornwall First Selectman Gordon Ridgway, Cornwall Selectman Jennifer Markow and CCS social studies teacher Will Vincent.

CORNWALL — “In Cornwall you have made the decision that everyone here matters and everyone’s story is important,” said U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Waterbury, to the seventh grade class at Cornwall Consolidated School April 23.

Hayes was in attendance to celebrate history on Wednesday as the CCS students presented their group research project on the life of Naomi Cain Freeman, the first Black female landowner in Cornwall.
