Checkered flags for Scouts

NORTH CANAAN — Cub Scout Pack 22 held its annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday, March 19, at North Canaan Elementary School.

The derby is an annual Cub Scout event that many area packs participate in. The first derby was held in 1953; California Cubmaster Don Murphy came up with the idea as an activity for Scouts who were too young to participate in soap box derbies.

Each participant starts with a kit that includes a rectangular block of pine wood, wheels and axles. The mini cars are honed and refined to the point where some look like model kit cars.

There were winners in several categories.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
