Chubby Bunny and Whippoorwill join forces

FALLS VILLAGE — The Chubby Bunny CSA farm is teaming up with Whippoorwill Farm in Salisbury this year to make local produce and agriculture accessible to area residents. Members of the Chubby Bunny Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm will be able to pick up their produce at Whippoorwill Farm on Salmon Kill Road; and Chubby Bunny will continue to offer Whippoorwill Farm products at the farm in Falls Village.Whippoorwill Farm specializes in grass-fed beef, pork and chicken. The owners are Allen and Robin Cockerline.Tracy Hayhurst of Chubby Bunny said she and husband Dan have a lot of members in Salisbury. “We imagined people would rather not drive over here if they don’t have to,” to pick up their “shares,” or weekly allotment of fresh produce.Hayhurst said they hope to perhaps pick up new customers as well. “A lot of people still don’t know about us.”Chubby Bunny CSA members will still buy their shares directly from the farm.Dan Hayhurst, having recovered from a recent bout of flu, was plowing snow Monday morning, Feb. 25. He said that four “newbies” — new apprentices who work at the farm to gain experience in CSA-style agriculture — will arrive next week.He did not have any predictions about whether winter is over. A snowboarding enthusiast, he said that if there is another big snowfall, he’ll be happy. And if there isn’t, “We’ll get in the ground early.”Watching the chickens milling around in their quarters, he said that the addition of the Whipporwill site means Chubby Bunny will be dropping off shares there, in White Plains, N.Y., and at six drop-off sites in Fairfield County.Customers will continue to have the option of coming to the farm (at Undermountain and Cobble roads) to pick up their shares.Dan Hayhurst said that he believes that CSAs are thriving in general. For Chubby Bunny, that means “more legwork, more marketing. It’s not as easy a sell.”He said the 300 or so Chubby Bunny members are about evenly split between the Northwest Corner, Fairfield County and White Plains. For information on Chubby Bunny, including how to become a member, go to www.chubbybunnyfarm.com.
