Claude A. 'Sonny' Burdick Jr.

NORTH CANAAN — Claude A. “Sonny†Burdick Jr., 89, a former resident of Clinton Corners, N.Y., and Hillsdale, N.Y, died Dec. 28, 2008, at Geer Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

On Sept. 16, 1939, in Gardner, N.Y.,  he married Rebecca J. (Ferris) Burdick, who predeceased him on July 5, 2004.

He was born on March 31, 1919, in Clinton Corners, a son of Claude and Margaret (Lane) Burdick Sr.

Mr. Burdick lived in Clinton Corners and operated the Valley View Farm until 1980.

He and his wife moved to Hillsdale in Columbia County, where they resided until 2000. While living in Hillsdale, he was employed at the Hillsdale transfer station.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed many expeditions to Newfoundland, Canada, the Catskills and Long Lake, N.Y.

Active in his communities, he was a life member of the East Clinton Fire Company, a member of the Schultzville Masonic Lodge, past president of the Upton Lake Cemetery Association, former member of the Millbrook Board of Education, a member of the Friends Community Church and a committeman for the former GLF, now known as Agway.

He is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Joan and Donald Cahill of Claverack, N.Y, and Nancy and Paul Dellea Sr. of North Hillsdale; his grandchildren and their spouses, Paul and Tina Dellea of Copake, N.Y., Phillip and Christina Dellea of Hillsdale, Marc and Heather Dellea of Craryville, N.Y., Neil and Darby Dellea of Copake  Bryan, Rochelle and Victor Dellea, all of Hillsdale, Donna Cahill of North Canaan, Doreen Fowler of Eagles Mere, Pa., and Denise and Michael Claire of Dover, N.Y.; his great-grandchildren, Joshua Decker and his wife, Marybeth, of Hudson, N.Y., Arikka, Jacob and Nicholas Dellea all of Copake, Bradley and Tyler Dellea of Craryville, Derrick and Ciara Dellea of Copake, Don Cahill Sr. and wife Rebecca of North Canaan, Erin and Kyle Fowler of Eagles Mere and Mike and Alyssa Claire of Dover; his great- great-grandchildren, Michaela Decker of Hudson and Don Cahill Jr. and Saige Cahill, both of North Canaan; a sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Chet Marcey of Hudson; a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Betty Burdick of Interlachen, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Marie Dodds, and two great-great-grandsons, Hunter Claude Decker and Killian Chase Decker.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Upton Lake Cemetery in Clinton Corners.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
