Clayton to challenge Humes for first selectman seat

NORTH CANAAN — The election season has begun, with the Democrats caucusing last Thursday, July 23. After much work by Democratic Town Committee (DTC) members, many available seats on the ballot were filled and unanimously endorsed as a slate for the Nov. 3 municipal election.

More positions were available, and about 15 people attending were urged to recruit more candidates prior to the July 29 deadline to file a slate of endorsed candidates with the secretary of the state.

The Republicans were scheduled to caucus July 28. A comprehensive report of races and ballot openings will be published in a future issue of The Lakeville Journal. Residents are still able to petition for a slot if they file all necessary paperwork by 4 p.m. on Aug. 5.

A nominating petition must be signed by a number of qualified electors equal to the lesser of at least 1 percent of the votes cast for the same office at the last preceding election for such office — or 7,500. Obviously, the former applies here, in a town with a population of about 3,300. The percentage will surely be a single digit, which can be precisely determined by the town clerk.

Among the slots not filled at the caucus were town treasurer, tax collector and Region One representative. It was presumed the incumbents would run for re-election on the Republican slate.

Some drama appears in the offing for the Board of Selectmen, where incumbent Susan Clayton will seek the first selectman’s seat. DTC Chairman Todd Shearer was endorsed for a selectman’s seat.

Long-time First Selectman Douglas Humes told The Lakeville Journal he would seek re-election, as will Selectman Charlie Perotti. Humes has served for the past 28 years. The Republicans expected to be endorsed at Tuesday’s caucus.

Adding interest to the race is a state law that dictates that the candidate who loses the first selectman bid can still end up on the board, if they are among the top three vote-getters. It is certainly not unheard of here, and the players are familiar ones.

In 1991, Tom Gailes ran for first selectman and Clayton for selectman. Gailes lost to Humes but he and Henry Carley received more votes than Clayton, putting them both on the board.

In 2007, Clayton ran for first selectman and Gailes for selectman. She was unable to defeat Humes, but edged out Carly in a recount, while Gailes won his seat.

Walls still surprise me. If you look hard enough, you can find buried treasure.
Marge Parkhurst

After nearly 50 years of painting some of Litchfield County’s oldest homes and landmark properties, Marge Parkhurst has developed an eye for the past—reading the clues left behind in stenciled vines, forgotten bottles and newspapers tucked into walls, each revealing a small but vivid piece of Connecticut history.

Parkhurst was stripping wallpaper in a farmhouse in Colebrook — the kind of historic home she has spent decades restoring — when she noticed something odd. Three layers of paper had already come off — each one a different era’s idea of decoration — and beneath them, just barely visible under dull, off-white plaster, a pattern emerged.
