Come on down, the water’s fine

FALLS VILLAGE —  It was a gorgeous Monday morning at the Falls Village town pool.

It was sunny. It was warm. A clear sky was accompanied by a light, refreshing breeze.

And there was nobody in the pool.

Kaleigh Rogers, the manager, and her staff — Kat Krissel, Sofia Christinat and Taylor Hurley — sat at a table inside the pool building, out of the sun, and waited.

Rogers has worked at the pool for three years; this is her first year managing the facility.

She said she is not surprised by the drop in attendance.

“It’s dead because everybody’s on vacation,” she said. “Even though it’s gorgeous.”

The pool had good crowds earlier in the summer. Rogers said swimming lessons were offered in June and July, and that brought people in.

Rogers said she was thinking about having movie nights or scavenger hunts to boost attendance.

The staff consented to have their picture taken. As this was happening, a car rolled into the parking lot.

“We can get some photos of people in the water,” said Rogers. “My family’s here.”

But only one of the new arrivals was eager to a) get in the water and b) be immortalized in the pages of The Lakeville Journal.

Steven Wingard of Falls Village, who graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 2012, dove into the pool and cruised underwater a bit.

Wingard in September leaves for a course in underwater construction at the Commercial Diving Academy in Jacksonville, Fla.

He said the course covers underwater welding, explosives  and scuba training. And he said this while standing in water.

The pool closes for the season on Sunday, Aug. 30. It is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
