Free chat with Neil Gaiman & N.K. Jemisin, on May 2

Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., is now offering free access to some of the remarkable onstage conversations and arts events that have been offered at the beautiful Fisher Center on the school’s campus.

Many of the videos at the site feature the author Neil Gaiman, who is a professor at Bard but is best known to the world at large as the author of books/comics/graphic novels including “American Gods” (from which a television series was made), “Stardust” (made into a film with a giant cast that included Robert DeNiro, Ian McKellen, Michelle Pfeiffer and many more), “Anansi Boys,” “Coraline” (made into a film with Dakota Fanning) and “The Sandman” series.

Many of his works are otherworldly without truly being science fiction. His Upstreaming conversation on May 2 should prove particularly interesting, when he interviews the multi-award-winning author N.K. Jemisin, a Brooklyn, N.Y., resident who also writes fiction that is sort of science fiction but also very much rooted in the real world.

Her fiction series include The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms,  The Dreamblood and The Broken Earth. She also has a very witty and entertaining website and blog at www.nkjemisin.com.

That Upstream will be at 7:30 p.m. on May 2. Go to https://bit.ly/GaimanJemisinYT to sign in, or go to the Upstream website

Past conversations with Gaiman are available now at the site, including one with the cartoonist Art Spiegelman. And you can watch theater, dance and opera. Go to www.fishercenter.bard.edu/upstreaming; to get on the mailing list for future Upstreaming events, go to www.fishercenter.bard.edu/mailinglist.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
