Coney Island Chris was not the winner

CORNWALL — He came, he lit himself on fire, he was voted off the show.

Coney Island Chris’ run on the television show “America’s Got Talentâ€ is over. He made it through several rounds of judging before he got  the chance to perform live in Los Angeles Aug. 25.

When the 43-year-old from Naugatuck stepped onto the stage, it was with high energy and two scantily clad women holding fire extinguishers. The judges gave Chris three strikes, buzzing him as he was dousing himself and the stage with gasoline before lighting his tongue on fire and reprising one of his performances from last year’s Cornwall Talent Show: exhaling a giant fireball.

The third buzz came as he lit his butt on fire, proclaiming himself as “hot.

The judges found his act silly. But his fate was decided by voters, who called in after the show. Unfortunately for Chris, they agreed with the judges.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
