Copake Wine Works opens for business

COPAKE — On Monday, June 29, Copake Wine Works became one of the town’s newest businesses.

“Fine Wine. No attitude,” said owner Yanai Frank about the business’s motto. “Our motto speaks to what makes us unique. We have some really small-production, cool, hard-to-get wines on the shelves that will make certain wine geeks’ eyes light up.”

Copake Wine Works sells a variety of wines and spirits.

“We don’t stock a lot of the really big brands, but work hard to find great bottles at all prices, including some delicious ones under $10,” said Frank. “Our job is to find the good values — our customers’ job is to enjoy them.”

Copake Wine Works is also hoping to host in-store wine tastings in the near future.  In addition, for customers who can’t find a certain wine they are looking for, Copake Wine Works is happy to look into placing special orders.

“We like working with them to find out what they like to drink and introducing them to grapes and regions they never knew existed,” said Frank of his customer base.

Frank’s wife, Christy, owns Frankly Wines in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood and has been in the wine business for more than 15 years.

During that time, Frank and his family often explored the Copake area. They visited so frequently, they decided to buy a place in West Copake about a year ago. They would often eat at Dad’s Copake Diner after ski lessons at Catamount before heading back to their home in New York City.

After one such meal, Christy noticed a “FOR SALE” sign in the old Copake Pharmacy building.

“My wife can’t look at any empty store front without considering it as a potential wine store,” said Frank.

That same weekend, Frank and his wife discovered that the nearest wine shop was closing.

“I figured this could be a good opportunity,” said Frank.

Frank and his family followed through on that opportunity and opened their store sooner than planned.

Frank, who has a background in finance, decided to hire Danielle Potter as the store manager. Potter had worked at Frankly Wines before she moved to the Hudson Valley about a year ago.

“While I did take a few wine courses back in college and have spent many nights tasting and talking about wine, that’s not really a business plan,” said Frank. “So I hired Danielle Potter as the store manager. I knew she would be a great fit.”

Copake Wine Works plans to consistently refresh the shelves and bring in new wines every week.

“We’re working to grow our selection of local wines, spirits, and will soon introduce cider,” said Frank.

People at Copake Wine Works enjoy interacting with the customers by providing suggestions and sharing their wine experiences.

“What really makes us happy is when a regular comes back raving about how much they loved last night’s recommendation,” said Frank. “We have as much fun selling the $10 bottles as the $100 bottles.”

Copake Wine Works is located at 69 Main Street, Copake. It is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. For more information, go to www.copakewineworks.com or call 518-329-5549.

Walls still surprise me. If you look hard enough, you can find buried treasure.
Marge Parkhurst

After nearly 50 years of painting some of Litchfield County’s oldest homes and landmark properties, Marge Parkhurst has developed an eye for the past—reading the clues left behind in stenciled vines, forgotten bottles and newspapers tucked into walls, each revealing a small but vivid piece of Connecticut history.

Parkhurst was stripping wallpaper in a farmhouse in Colebrook — the kind of historic home she has spent decades restoring — when she noticed something odd. Three layers of paper had already come off — each one a different era’s idea of decoration — and beneath them, just barely visible under dull, off-white plaster, a pattern emerged.
