Creating a link between children and their canine counterparts

By TOM O’SHEASpecial to The Millerton NewsMILLBROOK — All dog owners know the satisfaction they get every day when interacting with their pet. But there’s a special group of pet owners who get extra pleasure by having their animals reach out and touch the lives of children and adults. These are members of the Canine Link organization, which has formal arrangements with numerous facilities in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Canine Link trains and supports therapy dog teams who offer assistance and care to children in schools and hospitals and to adults in health care and senior facilities. They offer their services at no charge to the facility, and operate as a nonprofit group. One of the Canine Link groups is centered in the Millbrook area, visiting such local venues as Alden Elementary School, Cardinal Hayes Home, The Fountains at Millbrook, as well as nearby hospitals, hospice centers, nursing homes, day care centers, schools and colleges during finals week. There are a number of local residents who work as therapy teams with their dogs in the program; they say they get as much out of doing so as the participants, and the dogs. Among them is Susan Fireman of Ancram and her German shepherd, Boo. Fireman is executive director of the entire area covering Dutchess County and Manhattan, Fairfield and Litchfield counties, Connecticut and the Berkshires, Massachusetts, as well as a board member.Michael Poulin of Millbrook and his morkie (Maltese and Yorkshire terrier), China, also participate. Poulin is a board member of the area covered by Fireman.Ellen Botto of Salt Point and her German shepherd mix, Sassy, are a part of Canine Link.Sheila Melville of Hyde Park and her Jack Russell, Lilly, participate.Ken Weeden of Poughkeepsie and his bulldog, Toby, also help out with the program as does volunteer coordinator Jo-D Demore and her German shepard mix, Scoop. All six met at 2 p.m., at the Millbrook Free Library on Thursday, July 25, to have local children read a book to each dog and owner. The connections made among the different groups was obvious to anyone who watched and listened.Working with Joan Frenzel, youth services coordinator at the library, Canine Link meets regularly during the summer as an extension of the Alden school program.Canine Link is always looking for dogs and owners to volunteer for a six- to 12-session beginner or advanced therapy training program. Once certified, teams can begin to improve people’s lives in health care, education and other community facilities in the area.Canine Link can be contacted at 855-K9Link1 (855-595-4651), caninelinkdogs@gmail.com or at www.cltherapydogs.org.
