David T. Schmitt Jr.

NORTH CANAAN — David T. Schmitt Jr., 45, of Clayton Road, died Aug. 18, 2007, at Sharon Hospital.  

He was born in Keene, N.H., on Sept. 5, 1961, a son of M. Louise (Stitt) and David T. Schmitt Sr. of North Canaan.

He was a graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School, and had been employed for many years as a truck driver for area lumber companies, and as a part-time caterer. Of late he also assisted with care in the home of his elderly parents. He enjoyed crafting wooden lamps, cooking and photography.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Jonathan, and his three daughters Aubrey, Renee and Taylor, all of North Canaan; two grandsons, J.J. and Nicholas; one sister, Catherine Caron of Baltimore, Md.; and six brothers, Joseph and Robert, both of Front Royal, Va., the Rev. Thomas of Weston, Mass., Paul of Princeton, Mass., Gregory of North Canaan, and Peter of Middletown, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held from the Newkirk Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 9:15 a.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church in North Canaan at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
