Democratic congressional primary: Delgado wins

DUTCHESS COUNTY — Voters across Dutchess County visited the polls on Tuesday, June 26, to cast their ballots  in this year’s federal congressional primary election for New York’s 19th Congressional District.

Candidate Antonio Delgado won, which means he will face off against Congressman John Faso (R-Kinderhook) in November.

The other Democratic candidates who ran in the primary included Brian Flynn, Erin Collier, Gareth Rhodes, Pat Ryan, Jeff Beals and Dave Clegg. Under the Women’s Equality party line, candidates were listed as “opportunity to ballot.”

From 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., registered voters stopped by their town’s designated polling places to vote. In Amenia, voters cast their ballots at the Wassaic firehouse while voters in the town of North East cast their ballots at the NorthEast-Millerton Library Annex. Meanwhile, Pine Plains voters cast their ballots at Pine Plains Town Hall while town of Washington voters voted at the Millbrook firehouse.

The unofficial results were posted by the Dutchess County Board of Elections. In total, there were 6,027 ballots cast with two undervotes and three overvotes. An overvote occurs when one votes for more than the maximum number of selections allowed in a contest. An undervote is when a ballot is not counted because of unclear marking by the voter.

Out of 6,022 ballots, Delgado led with 1,701 votes, followed by Ryan with 1,301 votes and Rhodes with 1,155 votes. For the Women’s Equality votes, one write-in ballot was received.

In the town of Pine Plains, Ryan received the greatest number of votes with 38 votes out of 121, followed by Rhodes with 29 votes and Delgado with 18 votes.

In the town of North East, Rhodes received 76 out of 188 total votes while Ryan received 38 votes and Delgado received 27.

Meanwhile, in Amenia, there was a total of 154 votes cast. The breakdown was not made available by press-time.

Likewise, in the neighboring town of Washington, primary results were not available before this paper went to press.

For his part, Congressman Faso commented on the primary results.

“I congratulate Mr. Delgado on his victory in the Democratic primary election,” Faso said in a prepared statement. “He will soon learn, as the last two Democrat candidates for Congress before him, that our neighbors do not look kindly upon candidates who have just moved into our district and presume to represent us. I look forward to a spirited general election campaign.”

Delgado, meanwhile, could not be reached for comment before press-time.

This year’s general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

When the guide gets it wrong

Rosa setigera is a native climbing rose whose simple flowers allow bees to easily collect pollen.

Dee Salomon

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
