Democrats nominate candidates at caucus

MILLERTON — The North East Democratic Committee at its caucus Jan. 28 nominated two candidates for the upcoming election.

Incumbent Yosh Schulman was nominated to return to his post as village trustee, while newcomer Debbie Middlebrook was nominated to run for a second village trustee position. Both positions are for two-year terms. Schulman, who filled his trustee seat after Mayor John Scutieri was elected and therefore vacated his trustee seat, is seeking his first full term. Republican John "Jack" Thomas is running for re-election for the other seat, which is the one being sought by Middlebrook.

Democratic Committee Chairman Jon Arnason ran the caucus, which lasted about 45 minutes and roughly a dozen people attended.

"I think the village and the town both, in many ways, have the greatest impact in all of our lives, and it is critical for citizens to have a say in that, and the way they have a say most easily is by voting and electing people," Arnason said. "I think everybody should make time to vote."

Arnason added that it’s also time for voters, Democratic and Republican alike, to think about the primaries.

"It’s very important to vote on Feb. 5," he said. "It’s a very important election coming up and people should express their preference."

Village elections, meanwhile, are Tuesday, March 18.
