Dutchess Day School graduation 2012

MILLBROOK — Dutchess Day School’s (DDS) eighth grade became the 53rd class to graduate from the school on Saturday, June 9.

A total of 21 students, nine girls in white dresses and 12 boys in blue jackets, proceeded into the courtyard at 10 a.m. They were Jake Bhangdia, Jack Bowmar, Alexander Chalk, Olivia Finemore, Nicholas J. Genovese, Neil Howland, Samantha Keller, Claudia Lamprecht, Rose Lang-Maso, Carter Malleolo, Antonia L. Meyers, Caterina Moran, Danielle M. O’Callaghan, Douglas C. Pfeifer, Samuel John Pomichter, Gavin Charles Schneible, Jason Maxwell Mayfield Sheldon, Ellery Lincoln Smith, Simone Oziebel Teague, Henry Alexander Thomas and Benjamin Ryan Yager. The Head of School, Nancy Hathaway, and Head of the Board, Sarah Stack, presided.

Claudia Lamprecht and Rose Lang-Maso, members of the graduating class, spoke, focusing on their memories and how Dutchess Day has prepared them for their future. Claudia referenced George Shinn, who said, “Growth means change and change involves risk, stepping from the known to the unknown.” She observed that her class has “grown together like siblings in the comfort of Dutchess Day’s friendly hallways, but now it’s time for us to move ahead onto unfamiliar paths. Even though the change is scary, we will always have our Dutchess Day foundation to support us and to show us what is possible with some hard work.”

Rose followed and evoked the imagery of the stars, and her class as a unique constellation. “Here at DDS, we have all shone, individually, and with each other....The cosmos is vast and wide but we are made of light and we will always shine brightly.”

The commencement speaker this year was Nigel Pink, director of athletics, coach and teacher at Dutchess Day School. He advised the students to “set yourself clear goals, make decisions based on an end in mind, and think carefully about what you say, what you do, and what you put in your body.” He finished his address by asking the students to stand and applaud first their teachers and then their parents and families.

Nancy Hathaway then read citations about each student, small written tributes that pay homage to each students’ accomplishments and unique personality, and gave them their specially selected book and diploma.

During the ceremony, both third- to fifth- and sixth- to eighth-grade choruses sang songs for the Class of 2012. The eighth grade also chose its own special song that they shared, “In My Life,” a Beatles’ classic.

The Dutchess Day School wishes them all the best of luck as they move onto the following secondary schools: Arlington High School; Berkshire School; Choate Rosemary Hall; Hackley School; Holderness School; Lincoln School; Millbrook School; Millbrook High School; Our Lady of Lourdes; Poughkeepsie High School; Rhinebeck High School; St. Paul’s School; Salisbury School; Webutuck High School and Westminster School.
