EDC changes ‘Passport’ program rules

WINSTED — On Friday, Dec. 19, in an email to local retailers, EDC Chairman Dick Labich said the commission has eliminated the purchase requirement for its “Passport” program.

As part of the program, the commission printed out booklets that look like passports.

The program started on Nov. 29. The booklets were distributed to local stores to be given out to customers.

In the original rules, a minimum of a $10 purchase from a participating merchant was required for a stamp in the “passport.”

A minimum of eight stamps was required for a customer to enter into a contest for gift certificates: A $500 gift certificate from IGA Super Saver, $250 gift certificate from True Value Hardware and $100 from Park Place Hardware.

The contest is scheduled to end on Wednesday, Dec. 31, with completed passports entered no later than Friday, Jan. 9.

However, in Labich’s letter on Dec. 19, he said that no purchases will be required from stores participating in the program and that “a stamp on the passport from the participating retailer or restaurant is all that is necessary.”

“We talked to the state’s Department of Consumer Protection and they said we don’t need a permit for the contest,” Labich said. “However, they suggested and advised that we eliminate the clause about the purchases. So we’re eliminating that. From what I heard a lot of merchants were not following it anyway. This is the first time we’ve done this and we’re still learning.”

Plein Air Litchfield returns for a week of art in the open air

For six days this autumn, Litchfield will welcome 33 acclaimed painters for the second year of Plein Air Litchfield (PAL), an arts festival produced by Art Tripping, a Litchfield nonprofit.
