Eight NFL divisions are still up for grabs

Last week’s record, 10-6; for the season, 115-82

Pick of the Week: 1-0; for the season, 10-3

Last week was another double-digit week for me, so I’m definitely smiling. My Pick of the Week, the Packers, also covered nicely.

I would like to extend my congratulations to the Gilbert-Northwestern football team. Although they lost the Class M CIAC semifinal game to Hillhouse, it did nothing to diminish the wonderful season these young men enjoyed.

Back to the NFL. Let’s get picking.

Thursday, Dec. 9

Indianapolis at Tennessee — The Titans seem to have lost their heart, while the undermanned Colts are coming up just short in big games. I think the Colts win this one, 30-17.

Sunday, Dec. 12

Tampa Bay at Washington — The Redskins seem to be in turmoil, while the Bucs continue to play everyone tough. I’ll stick with Tampa Bay, 20-13.

Cleveland at Buffalo — Buffalo might want to consider winning the Cam Newton sweepstakes. I’ll stick with the Browns, 20-17.

New York Giants at Minnesota — The Vikings are definitely playing better following the coaching change, but the Giants appear to be up again. I’ll go with New York, 27-20.

Green Bay at Detroit — The Packers can’t afford a letdown at this point with the Bears still a game in front of them. I’ll stick with the Packers here, 30-23.

Oakland Raiders at Jacksonville — The Jags continue to improve from week to week and should win this one, 24-17.

Cincinnati at Pittsburgh — Plain and simple, the Bengals need a coaching change. I’ll take the Steelers, 24-13.

Atlanta at Carolina — The Falcons continue to win, while the Panthers continue to lose. I’ll stick with the Falcons, 27-20.

New England at Chicago — I’m going with an upset in this one because the Pats are coming off a big win and a short week of practice. I’ll take the Bears, 24-23.

Seattle at San Francisco — Neither team is out of it, and a victory by the 49ers keeps the playoff hopes alive. I’m going with my heart — 49ers win, 23-20.

St. Louis at New Orleans — This is another game about who can least afford to lose, and that’s the Saints. I’ll take Brees and the Saints, 31-24.

Denver at Arizona — There’s not much to get excited about in this game. I’ll go with the home team. Cards win, 24-20.

Miami at N.Y. Jets — The bubble may have burst for the Jets, but the same can be said for the Dolphins. Jets win a tough one, 23-20.

Kansas City at San Diego — I’d like to see the Chiefs win, but something tells me that David Rivers will come up big a home. San Diego wins, 33-24.

Philadelphia at Dallas — This could and should be a great game. In the end the Eagles come out on top, 31-27.

Monday, Dec. 13

Baltimore at Houston — Baltimore cannot afford to drop another game behind the Steelers, so I see them winning, 20-17.

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
