Ellen (Berner) Lorch

NORTH CANAAN — Ellen (Berner) Lorch, 86, passed away April 5, 2012, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Pine Bluff, Ark., the daughter of Ida and Clyde Berner. Ellen spent her youth in Bridgeport, Conn., and after graduating from Warren Harding High School, she earned a secretarial degree from Post Junior College.Ellen was a Rainbow Girl and an accomplished tap dancer. She loved to visit her parents’ summer home in West Cornwall where she met her husband, Arthur, on one of the family’s frequent stops to buy eggs and milk at the Lorch family farm in Cornwall Bridge.Ellen married Arthur in 1946 and dedicated her life to making a nurturing home for her three sons. She was a Cub Scout den mother and loved gardening. She enjoyed watching the songbirds at her feeders and the deer and wild turkeys in her yard. She was an accomplished, self-taught seamstress and excelled at various needlecrafts for which she won awards at local fairs. She led the St. Peters Lutheran Church Altar Guild and volunteered countless hours to her church as council member and treasurer for 39 years. She developed renowned cooking skills, which she generously shared in support of her church, the Masonic Lodge, the Grange and the Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to brief stints as a medical secretary and a legal secretary, Ellen was the treasurer to the nonprofit Cornwall Emergency Medical Fund from 1993 to 2006. Ellen is survived by her three sons, John of Bolton,Conn., David of Meredith, N.H., and Brian of Cornwall Bridge; a grandson, Zachary Lorch of Meredith; and her daughters-in-law, Anne Lorch of Bolton and Lisa Lorch of Meredith.Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Arthur.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, April 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon. The funeral service will be held Friday, April 13, at 11 a.m., at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Cornwall. Interment will take place privately. Memorial donations in Ellen’s name may be made to St. Peters Lutheran Church, PO Box 38, Cornwall, CT 06753.

NORFOLK –Roomful of Blues, the Rhode Island-based band hailed by DownBeat magazine as being “in a class by themselves,” will bring its mix of blues, jump, swing, boogie-woogie and soul to Infinity Hall in Norfolk on Friday, April 17, at 8 p.m.

The long-running group, formed in 1967, is touring behind its Alligator Records album Steppin’ Out!, released in late 2025.

Bob was born Jan. 16, 1949, to the late Peter and Dorothy (Fountain) Stapf. He began working at an early age, met his forever love, Sandy, in 7th grade and later graduated from Pine Plains Central School.

Michael was born on April 23, 1944, in Bronx, New York. He was the son of the late Thomas and Kathleen Carabine of New York.

The parking lot of The Little Red Barn Brewers in Winsted was full on Wednesday, April 8, as more than 100 people from 43 Connecticut towns — including New Haven and Vernon — arrived carrying personal treasures for a live taping of “Audacious LIVE Show & Tell.”

Chion Wolf, host and producer of Connecticut Public’s “Audacious,” and her crew, led by production manager Maegn Boone, brought the program to the packed brewery for an evening of story-driven conversation and shared keepsakes.

After nearly 50 years of painting some of Litchfield County’s oldest homes and landmark properties, Marge Parkhurst has developed an eye for the past—reading the clues left behind in stenciled vines, forgotten bottles and newspapers tucked into walls, each revealing a small but vivid piece of Connecticut history.

Parkhurst was stripping wallpaper in a farmhouse in Colebrook — the kind of historic home she has spent decades restoring — when she noticed something odd. Three layers of paper had already come off — each one a different era’s idea of decoration — and beneath them, just barely visible under dull, off-white plaster, a pattern emerged.
