Ferraro, border collies bound for championship

MILLERTON — Resident Michele Ferraro and her border collies, Clive and Mawde, are competing in a sheepdog tournament in Utah during Labor Day weekend.

The 2015 Soldier Hollow Classic Sheepdog Championship is in Midway, Utah, Sept. 4 to 7.

Ferraro, who owns and lives on Caora Farm just south of the village with Kak Weathers, attended the same competition with Clive in 2012.

Caora is Gaelic for sheep, which are abundant at the farm. Ferraro said the sheep function as a resource for her dogs to train for competition. The farm also hosts a regional competition, open to the public, every year in June.

Ferraro’s other competition dog is 4-year-old Mawde. Clive is 11.

“So this is probably his final year,” Ferraro said.

Ferraro attended Soldier Hollow in 2012 on Clive’s merit, she said.

Shortly before, Ferraro purchased Clive from his previous handler, Amanda Milliken, who had then recently won the 2011 Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship in Colorado.

“[Our performance] was respectable but it was a learning process, and that was the purpose of going out,” Ferraro said of the competition in 2012.

Now, the handler said, she, Clive and Mawde are attending the Soldier Hollow on the whole team’s merit.

“My mind-set is actually good going in” Ferraro said. “I’ve got two really good dogs. I’ve been there before. I’m feeling comfortable and confident, and I’ve been practicing.”

Practice includes different routines on the farm that will be seen during the trials at the competition, including sheep herding events called “outrun,” “lift” and “the fetch.”

Ferraro has been competing since 2008. She’s lived in Millerton for three years — before that, Wassaic. Professionally, she’s an equine veterinarian and partner at Millbrook Equine.

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
