A fiesta for UConn football

STORRS — For the first time in college history, the University of Connecticut Huskies football team will be in one of the top five bowl games of the 2010-11 season, when they face the Oklahoma Sooners Jan. 1 in the Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. The 8:30 p.m. EDT game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

The Huskies earned the bowl invitation by winning the 2010 Big East Championship. After starting the season at 0-2, the Huskies won five straight games, finishing the season with an 8-4 record, 5-2 in the Big East. The season was capped off by Saturday night’s 16-3 win over South Florida, with kicker Dave Teggart blasting a 52-yard, career-long field goal with 17 seconds left in  the fourth quarter.

“Playing in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 is a tribute to these young men, coach Randy Edsall said in a media release. “We know we have a tremendous opportunity and a difficult challenge ahead of us playing Oklahoma.

Edsall gets a $100,000 bonus for getting the Huskies into the Fiesta Bowl, while UConn will receive the lion’s share of a $17 million payout for playing in the bowl game. The money will be pooled and shared with seven other schools in the Big East.

The Sooners are considered a heavy favorite in the Fiesta Bowl, and Edsall has been asked by many how it feels to be the underdog.

“We’ve always been the underdog, the coach said. “I think you always get a little more fired up when people think you can’t do something and you’re not good enough to do something. It’s always good to be able to prove people wrong.

Still, the Huskies will be facing stiff competition. Oklahoma has an 11-2 record and had a 6-2 record in league play. The Sooners defeated Nebraska by a 23-20 score on Saturday in the Big 12 championship game in Arlington, Texas.

UConn moved into the Associated Press top 25 for the first time this season on Sunday at the No. 25 spot. The Huskies were also the top “also receiving votes team in the USA Today poll. The Sooners are ranked ninth in the country in the AP poll and tied for eighth in the USA Today poll.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
