Fire incinerates Amenia home

AMENIA — The residence of James Marshall, located at 5197 Route 22, was destroyed in a fire on the evening of Thursday, June 2.No one was home when the fire started and there were no injuries.Firetrucks and ambulances were dispatched around 9 p.m.Firefighters from Amenia, Wassaic, Millerton, Millbrook, Unionvale, Sharon and Lakeville responded to the second-alarm fire. Dover was on standby.It is uncertain when the fire started. When the Amenia Fire Department arrived on the scene minutes after receiving the call, the entire structure was fully engulfed in flames.Amenia Fire Chief Sean Howard said the investigation team on the scene was unable to determine the cause of the fire, but based on the damage, he believed that the fire began in or around the dining room.Deputy Sheriff TJ Hanlon of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office could not confirm the location of the start of the fire or the cause of the fire because the investigation is still ongoing.Marshall was the sole resident of the home. He has worked as a history instructor at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville since 1989, but is currently on leave.Firefighters and other workers worked until roughly 2:30 a.m. to put out the fire and to investigate the scene.The fire rekindled on Sunday afternoon, according to Howard, but was quickly doused.Faculty members at The Hotchkiss School are currently collecting funds for Marshall. NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
