Former village business owner goes mobile

MILLERTON — Millerton residents and weekenders have likely noticed the 1973 Airstream parked on No. 9’s lawn on Saturdays and Sundays recently. It’s possible they’ve thought it’s for sale. If led by curiosity inside, however, they’ve instead discovered Camp.

Camp is a mobile clothing store founded by Mimi Ramos, village resident and former owner of Parlour, a local business that closed in 2011.

“It pretty much broke my heart to close,” Ramos said during an interview in Camp, a 31-foot long silver trailer completely remodeled inside.

Ramos’ boyfriend, Richard Lanka, converted the gutted camper’s interior into the modern chic shop it is now.

“The same week [Parlour closed], I got the idea to do something similar to a food truck but put clothes in it,” Ramos said.

In 2013, Ramos found the Airstream she’d been looking for in Greenport, Long Island, and went to work on her vision with Richard Lanka Associates.

Sourcing products from trade shows in New York City and Las Vegas, Ramos has stocked her camper with dresses, tunics and  tops for women in Millerton and beyond.

Though Ramos considers the village home base, Camp is a traveling store.

“The idea is to go where people are and have a fresh audience and sell clothes,” she said. “I really plan to feel it out.”

On private property in Millerton, Camp has clearance to vend from the owners, Ramos said. Arrangements are in play for Camp to visit Great Barrington, Mass., too.

The store’s Facebook and Instagram accounts will announce where Camp is headed next.

An original feature left intact is the trailer’s oven and stove. Ramos plans to recruit her mother, Leela Dinunzio (owner of Coco’s Crumbs), to bake inside.

“I want to make it a fun hangout — maybe put tables in,” she said.
