Free program for toddlers at NECC

“Growing Together,” the North East Community Center’s (NECC) long-running group for parents and preschool children, has an exciting new direction. Renamed “Growing Together Presents...,” the program features creative activities that will please toddlers and parents alike.Over the next few weeks, the group will dabble in fingerpainting (Friday, Sept. 6), learn about washing hands from “Scrubby Bear,” (Friday, Sept. 13), bake apple muffins (Friday, Sept. 27), and make feather art (Friday, Oct. 4). The activities will encourage children to learn, socialize and share while having a lot of fun.“We’ll be featuring a different theme or project every week,” said Lauren Astor, the group’s facilitator. “The activities will be led by John Mahoney, our early childhood education specialist, who is an amazing resource for teaching and entertaining toddlers at the same time.”Guests from the community will also lead special programs, such as creative movement and music, from time to time.“Growing Together Presents...” will include play and snack time for children and a discussion forum for parents.“Parents can join me in an hour of meaningful conversation about the joys and challenges of raising children,” said Astor. “Our motto is ‘happy parent, happy child,’ and so many participants have expressed the importance of this part of the program over the years.”“Growing Together has always been a much-loved program,” said Jenny Hansell, NECC’s executive director. “Our goals are to get families with young children together, help prepare the kids for preschool or kindergarten, and provide helpful advice and a supportive network of friends for parents. The addition of new kids’ activities is going to make it even better.”“Growing Together Presents...” is free and open to all parents and children up to age 5. It is made possible in 2013 and 2014 by grants from the United Way and the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, and a weekly schedule of activities is posted at www.neccmillerton.org and on the center’s Facebook page. The group meets on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Millerton Elementary School (5833 South Elm Avenue, just south of the light on routes 22 and 44). No preregistration is necessary and drop-ins are welcome; for more information, call NECC at 518-789-4259.Anna Clune is development Coordinator for the North East Community Center.
