Gilbert softball shut out by Terryville

WINSTED — The youthful Gilbert softball team found themselves outmatched against a strong pitching and batting effort from the Terryville Kangaroos Monday, May 4.

The Kangaroos launched themselves into a six-run advantage by the end of the first, before finally being halted by a battered Yellowjacket defense.

Gilbert’s woes were only just beginning, as their offensive endeavors were quickly and neatly dispatched by the Roos.

Terryville added another run to their lead in the second, while Kangaroo starting pitcher Beth Grimes gave Gilbert no opportunity to respond early on by striking out the side in the bottom of the second.

The Kangaroos were able to add another run in the third, putting the score to Terryville 8, Gilbert 0. The Yellowjackets were finally able to halt a rampaging Terryville hitting game, but could not find a way to surmount the Roo defense and took the loss at home, 8-0.

Terryville’s Grimes pitched a complete game and amassed 16 strikeouts. Grimes kept the Jackets hitless through the first three innings, allowed only one hit overall, and struck out the side four times in the game.

Gilbert’s starting pitcher Jess Shotwell managed four strikeouts and collected the Jackets’ only hit in the game before being relieved at the mound by Nikki Mangione in the seventh. Mangione allowed only one hit in the inning she pitched and came up with a strikeout of her own.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
