Girls track remains strong

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School girls varsity track team anticipates a strong finish in the Berkshire League for 2014. After six meets, the Mountaineers stand at 3-3, a respectable record considering much of the team was away for the first two meets.Housatonic came on strong in a meet against Terryville, Litchfield and Lewis Mills on Tueday, April 22, claiming victory over all three schools. Standout performances included a sweep in the shot put and discus, with throws by team captain Katie Heacox, Abrah Toomey, Lauren Gilderdale and freshman Angela Tabor.Senior Olivia LaFontan anchored the 4x800 relay and claimed the win with help from Chelsea Kearns, Emily Sullivan and Eve Cullerton. LaFontan followed that up with first-place results in both the 1600- and 800-meter races. Pole vaulters Leah Parker and Hannah McGuire took first and second place overall. McGuire soared in the high jump as well, taking first place overall, and teammate Anna Besmer placed second.On Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, the girls participated in the 34th O’Grady Relays in Danbury. Friday saw Heacox take second place in the hammer throw with a throw of 125’10”, which was good enough to qualify her for the national meet. She is currently the reigning state champion in the event. On Saturday the girls claimed fourth place in the shot put and discus relays, a compilation of the three best throws made by Heacox, Gilderdale and Tabor in a field of more than 80 girls from teams all across the state.

P&Z deliberates on Wake Robin expansion

LAKEVILLE — Nearly a month after closing the public hearing on the proposed Wake Robin Inn redevelopment, the Planning and Zoning Commission began its deliberations last week over the course of two special meetings devoted solely to the controversial project.

Over four hours of discussion helped the Commission to establish its position at this stage in the process, about a month before its statutory window to render a decision expires on Nov. 13.

Fallen tree cancels jubilee

The roof of the Grove was damaged by the tree, the event tent was punctured, a chef was injured and the Jubilee Luncheon was canceled Sunday, Oct. 12.

LAKEVILLE — The Lakeville Journal and The Millerton News Jubilee Luncheon fundraiser at the Grove Sunday, Oct. 12 was canceled after a very large section of a tree fell on the caterer’s tent at about 10 a.m.

Most of the catering staff heard the tree breaking up and got out of the tent in time, but the chef was hit by the falling limbs and sustained non-critical injuries.

Rhys V. Bowen

LAKEVILLE — Rhys V. Bowen, 65, of Foxboro, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly in his sleep on Sept. 15, 2025. Rhys was born in Sharon, Connecticut, on April 9, 1960 to Anne H. Bowen and the late John G. Bowen. His brother, David, died in 1979.

Rhys grew up at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, where his father taught English. Attending Hotchkiss, Rhys excelled in academics and played soccer, basketball, and baseball. During these years, he also learned the challenges and joys of running, and continued to run at least 50 miles a week, until the day he died.
