Gloria Moyer Cluff

WASSAIC — Gloria Moyer Cluff, 80, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Feb. 10, 2012, at Sharon Hospital. Gloria was born on June 19, 1931, in Sharon, where she spent her childhood. She later became a longtime resident of Wassaic, where she raised her family. She will be remembered most for her unwavering strength, compassion and never-ending fortitude. Gloria was dedicated to her job at Sharon Hospital for more than 40 years. She forever will be remembered as the “baker” at Sharon Hospital, providing staff with baked goodies even after her retirement in 1994. Gloria was an avid reader and loved her weekly Scrabble games with friends. She loved to travel and was an accomplished knitter. She took pride in her garden and enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. Gloria was dedicated to her family and was happiest when surrounded by her family, friends and most of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gloria is survived by her three sons, Bradley and his wife, Shirley, of Salisbury, Benjamin and his wife, Emma, of Sharon and Timothy and his wife, Kitty, of Wassaic; her daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Robert Mitchell, of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; her many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and her loving siblings, Edward O’Dell and his wife, Donna, her sister, Wanda Duncan and her husband, Frederick and Theodore Hurn and his wife, June.Gloria was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Harry Moyer; and her sister, Gladys MacDonald.A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Sharon on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be held at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.Memorial contributions may be made to local veterans organizations; or The American Cancer Society. The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of arrangements.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
