AMENIA — Reading was celebrated last week at the Amenia Free Library as residents from the town participated in Read Aloud Week.
Librarian Miriam Devine said she picked six guest readers from the town to read to more than 163 Amenia Elementary School children, including retired first-grade teacher Gail Gamble, teacher Rhoda Lubalin, Father Anthony from the Catholic Church, Councilwoman Victoria Perotti and state Sen. Vincent Leibell.
"We picked the best books for age groups kindergarten to second grade," Devine said. "We chose books like, ‘Good Night Gorilla,’ ‘If Anything Goes Wrong at the Zoo,’ and ‘The Empty Pot.’"
Devine said that it is important for adults to read to children.
"It is so essential," Devine said. "To read to children begins their interest in books. It encourages children to read. If you read to children before their bedtime, it calms them down."
