Grove, firehouse projects go out to bid

SALISBURY — Bidding is open on two major projects, the new firehouse and Town Grove buildings.

The deadlines are Thursday, Aug. 13, for Grove bids and Thursday, Sept. 10 for the firehouse.

There will be a walk-through for interested parties at the firehouse site, the former ITW building on Route 44 between Salisbury and Lakeville, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14.

At a similar walk-through at the Grove last week, some 30 contractors showed up, according to First Selectman Curtis Rand.

Rand and selectman Bob Riva, who is on the Firehouse Building Committee, said they wish to encourage local contractors to bid. Because both projects will have budgets over $100,000, prevailing wage laws will be in effect.

Rand said that while the firehouse project pay scale will come under state regulations, the Grove, which is using federal grant money, will use either the state or national prevailing wage, whichever is higher.

Either option involves considerable paperwork, and Rand and Riva said they would run an informal workshop for contractors on how to handle it, if necessary.

In any event, potential bidders should not be discouraged for that reason.

“We’ll make the time to help people get through it, said Riva.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
