Grumbling Gryphons Hosts Theater Camp, Two Plays

Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children’s Theater, a nonprofit organization that is celebrating its 37th year, will once again host its annual theater arts camp for children ages 6 to 16 at Cornwall Town Hall from July 30 to Aug. 6.

“This camp is a tradition,” said Artistic Director Leslie Elias. “Students come from all over. We’re like a family, but we always welcome new people.”

The eight-day camp focuses on theater, music, dance and art each day from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and half-day options are available. And even though it starts in a few days, Elias said that registration is still open.

The camp will culminate in a performance of “St. George and The Dragon,” a play written and directed by Elias that is described as “a traditional medieval tale involving a fierce and hungry dragon that is ravaging the Kingdom of Gryphondom.”

The play features an enormous dragon that was created by Ellen Moon, Jane Prentice and the youth of United Church of Christ in Cornwall.

The public performance of “St. George and the Dragon” will be held at Cornwall Town Hall on Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. Following the show, the dragon will dance onto the town Green along with the Golden Lady, a giant rod puppet created by Moon. Refreshments will be served.

Before the theater camp kicks off, the Grumbling Gryphons will present a free performance of “The Myth of Persephone” at the Scoville Memorial Library in Salisbury on Saturday, July 29, at 1 p.m.

Prior to the show, children ages 6 and up are invited to participate in a free Greek drama workshop at the library from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Those who take part in the workshop will actually be in the play — and Elias said that parents are welcome to jump in.

“It’s really about empowering children and making their spirits alive. And I think adults miss being kids,” she said. “I found my calling when I first learned to read as a child. Storytelling is part of my blood. I love bringing stories to life.”

To register for the Grumbling Gryphons theater camp, email grumblinggryphons@gmail.com, call 860-672-0286 or go to www.grumblinggryphons.org. The cost is $400 for eight full days or $200 for eight half days.

‘Les Flashs d’Anne’: friendship, fire and photographs

Anne Day is a photographer who lives in Salisbury. In November 2025, a small book titled “Les Flashs d’Anne: Friendship Among the Ashes with Hervé Guibert,” written by Day and edited by Jordan Weitzman, was published by Magic Hour Press.

The book features photographs salvaged from the fire that destroyed her home in 2013. A chronicle of loss, this collection of stories and charred images quietly reveals the story of her close friendship with Hervé Guibert (1955-1991), the French journalist, writer and photographer, and the adventures they shared on assignments for French daily newspaper Le Monde. The book’s title refers to an epoymous article Guibert wrote about Day.

Nurit Koppel brings one-woman show to Stissing Center

In 1983, writer and performer Nurit Koppel met comedian Richard Lewis in a bodega on Eighth Avenue in New York City, and they became instant best friends. The story of their extraordinary bond, the love affair that blossomed from it, and the winding roads their lives took are the basis of “Apologies Necessary,” the deeply personal and sharply funny one-woman show that Koppel will perform in an intimate staged reading at Stissing Center for Arts and Culture in Pine Plains on Dec. 14.

The show humorously reflects on friendship, fame and forgiveness, and recalls a memorable encounter with Lewis’ best friend — yes, that Larry David — who pops up to offer his signature commentary on everything from babies on planes to cookie brands and sports obsessions.
