Guests galore at Lions event

What an evening the Millerton Lions Club enjoyed at the No. 9 restaurant on Wednesday, July 22, with guests galore. We were joined by two of our 2015 scholarship recipients and their families. Andrew Hoke will be pursuing a career in biomedical engineering and Katherine Stevens will be entering the field of early childhood education and psychology. Zachary Decker, the third recipient, will be studying fire science but was unable to attend.

Also in attendance was 2011 recipient Justin Katan and his mother, Cheryl. We heard a little bit from Andrew and Katherine about their plans and hopes for their future and then Justin shared some tips with them about how to start off their freshman year on the right foot. He said to “always keep your doors open for the first two weeks” because people will stop in to visit and it’s a good way to meet the other students and fit in. He also stressed the importance of volunteering, getting involved and taking advantage of the many opportunities that will be offered to enrich their college lives.

Justin then spoke about some of his experiences in college and of the many diverse classes he’s enjoying that will enable him to join any one of several different fields of interest. He thanked the Millerton Lions for helping him realize his dreams; and of course he’s quite welcome. We wish good luck to them all and would love to hear from them again.

In attendance was Webutuck High School art teacher Craig Wickwire, who described the new photography classes being offered and the need for additional funding for the necessary equipment. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Lynn Buckley, a second-grade teacher at the Webutuck Elementary School, filled us in about the Quest program. Quest is an endowment fund through the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. Quest is given the use of interest (from the endowment) and is currently focused on enhancing the literary skills of pre-kindergarten through third-grade students through the sponsorship of supplemental activities to enrich their learning experience. It goes without saying that donations to this program would directly aid and affect the lives of our younger students and their families. Lynn stated that Quest hopes to be able to expand its funds enough to enable it to include the higher grades as well.

On a final note, we learned that all the entries have been received for the writing contest at the NorthEast-Millerton Library. The judges will soon be meeting to pick the winners of the two Kindles that have been donated by the Millerton Lions Club and they will be presented in August.

Watch here for the news of the talented winners.

 ‘Til next time ...

Melanee Mayville grew up in Millerton and still loves it here. She joined the Lions Club in 2008 and would love to see new members.

John Carter, who served as rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury from 1999 until his retirement in 2014, launched the first iteration of the nonprofit Vecinos Seguros 1 (Safe Neighbors) in 2017 by introducing a misa, a Spanish-language worship service, at Trinity Lime Rock Episcopal Church.

In December 2024, amid concerns over a renewed federal crackdown on immigrants, a group of volunteers revived the program as Vecinos Seguros 2 (VS2). According to its 2025 annual report, the initiative “created a network of trusted allies to help those who may be targeted by immigration enforcement agents,” taking a low-key approach that prioritizes in-person connections.
