Harry Barton Wheeler Jr.


PINE PLAINS - Harry Barton Wheeler Jr., 72, died suddenly on Feb. 12, 2008, in the house in which he was born. He will be greatly missed. He was the husband of Penny Wheeler.

He was born on Jan. 24, 1936, the son of the late Florence (Turbarg) and Harry Barton Sr.

Mr. Wheeler retired on Jan. 26, 2008, as a sergeant in the Department of Law Enforcement (DLE) with the New York State environmental department. He began his career in the Department of Fisheries on June 1, 1961, and remained there until he was hired on Dec. 24, 1964, as a conservation officer. He served for more than three decades in Dutchess County before transferring to the central office in Albany to help run the quartermaster program for the DLE.

During that time he was honored by the town of Pine Plains for exceptional public service. Most recently he was recognized as regional officer of the year by his peers in Region Three.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Dorinda ("Dori"); two sons, David and Daniel; two daughters-in-law, Laura and Sheryl; his stepchildren, Maggie and Haakon Oyen; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother, Richard; six sisters, Florence, Agnes, Carol, Helen, Dorothy and Louise; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Feb. 18 from the Episcopal Church of Regeneration on Pine Street in Pine Plains, the Rev. Michael Shafer officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
