Help sought in clearing undergrowth, restoring Rail Trail

SALISBURY — Someone standing at Railroad and Fowler streets in Salisbury and looking east will see a couple of big rocks and the Rail Trail extending into the distance.

They will also see, on their left, toward Main Street, a thick tangle of trees and brush.

Buried in this, to the left of the boulder, is a small wooden gate.

This is where the Rail Trail is supposed to be.

Railroad Street has become a de facto section of the Rail Trail instead.

David Elwell has decided to clear out the overgrown section of the Rail Trail. He was taking a preliminary whack at it Monday afternoon, Aug. 10.

He’s going to need some help.

Elwell said he has the blessing of First Selectman Curtis Rand and the Park and Forest Commission.

All he needs are some warm bodies and a few power tools.

He noted that Appalachian Trail hikers all use Route 44 to come into town, when they should be using the trail, which is more pleasant, less dangerous and just as direct.

To help out, call Elwell at 917-670-9585.
