Helping men to become better fathers

SHARON — A “father involvement program will start this month at the Sharon Hospital Good Neighbors building, 1 Low Road. The program, a joint venture between Family Strides in Torrington and Sharon Hospital, is for fathers who want to sharpen communication skills with their children, according to Mark Briggs, father involvement case manager for Family Strides.

“Sharon is pretty lucky because there are only six other programs like this across the state,â€ Briggs said. “I think that a lot of families are experiencing a lot of stress these days, especially with all of these economic problems. These programs have existed for some time for women. Recently, we began to realize  they could benefit men as well.â€

Briggs said the goal of the program is to make men more successful fathers and to help stabilize their lives.

“Socially, a lot of men are raised to be independent and stoic, so it’s difficult for men to ask for help, Briggs said. “These groups help through a peer support aspect.

The program is open to anyone and is free of charge. For more information contact Briggs at 860-482-3236.
