Hotchkiss School tennis, boys and girls, undefeated

LAKEVILLE —In a historic season for Hotchkiss School tennis, both the girls and boys teams completed undefeated seasons, capturing titles in both the Founders League and the New England Championships.

For the girls, this is the third undefeated season in six years, and the second consecutive New England title.

The girls carried a 22-match winning streak into the New England Championships, a streak that stretched back to last season’s second match, a win against Loomis Chaffee.

At the championship at Milton Academy, the team defeated The Pingree School and Andover before finally pulling out a decisive victory over both schools. Pingree and Andover finished second and third, respectively.

Students Clare Sutphin, Wells Wallace, Nina Walker and Emily Balderston all finished their Hotchkiss careers winning 41 out of 48 matches, with Wallace holding a perfect 29-0 record in her final two seasons.

While the team will miss these departing seniors, next season looks to be a promising one, as five of the top six players on the team will be returning.

“I think that they have a chance to be just as strong next year, said Wallace. “There are a lot of really talented lower-classmen who I think will do a great job filling in for the seniors.

The boys varsity tennis team concluded their perfect season with a 7-0 sweep of Loomis on May 19.

The win gives the team a 17-0 record on the season and also earned the team its third consecutive Founder’s League title. The Bearcats have also won the New England championship, the KITT tournament, and the SNETL tournament this season.

The May 19 sweep included wins at singles by Robert Lightbourn, Matt Shapiro, Charlie Hough, Will Campo, Jeff Kontulis and Gonzalo Mocorrea. The team also had doubles wins by Lightbourn and Kontulis and Shapiro and Julius Dixon.

The win capped a remarkable season for the team in which the boys on the team won 85 of a possible 91 points in head-to-head play. Only twice during the season was the team pushed to a 4-3 score: a match against Cheshire on April 28 and the New England finals against Deerfield on May 16.

Hotchkiss last finished undefeated in 1999, when David Bolmer was coaching the team. The team was also undefeated in 1995 under current head coach Bill Markey.

Mac Sutphin is a student in the class of 2012 at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville. Roger Wistar is director of computer and instructor in computer at Hotchkiss.

‘Les Flashs d’Anne’: friendship, fire and photographs

Anne Day is a photographer who lives in Salisbury. In November 2025, a small book titled “Les Flashs d’Anne: Friendship Among the Ashes with Hervé Guibert,” written by Day and edited by Jordan Weitzman, was published by Magic Hour Press.

The book features photographs salvaged from the fire that destroyed her home in 2013. A chronicle of loss, this collection of stories and charred images quietly reveals the story of her close friendship with Hervé Guibert (1955-1991), the French journalist, writer and photographer, and the adventures they shared on assignments for French daily newspaper Le Monde. The book’s title refers to an epoymous article Guibert wrote about Day.

In 1983, writer and performer Nurit Koppel met comedian Richard Lewis in a bodega on Eighth Avenue in New York City, and they became instant best friends. The story of their extraordinary bond, the love affair that blossomed from it, and the winding roads their lives took are the basis of “Apologies Necessary,” the deeply personal and sharply funny one-woman show that Koppel will perform in an intimate staged reading at Stissing Center for Arts and Culture in Pine Plains on Dec. 14.

The show humorously reflects on friendship, fame and forgiveness, and recalls a memorable encounter with Lewis’ best friend — yes, that Larry David — who pops up to offer his signature commentary on everything from babies on planes to cookie brands and sports obsessions.
