Housatonic student of the week

The Lakeville Journal con-gratulates students of the week designated by Housatonic Valley Regional High School. FALLS VILLAGE — At the HVRHS Open House recently, Lakeville Journal columnist Tim Abbott put Envirothon Team member Jordan Long’s knowledge of early successional ecosystems to the test at the end of the night, with Jordan holding his own on the issue as it pertained to the loss of habitat for the New England cottontail.Jordan, a senior from North Canaan, has long had an affinity for the natural world, thanks to two nature-loving parents who not only instilled a love of the outdoors, but a sense of stewardship and mission that stems from their religion. Jordan emulates Gifford Pinchot and John Muir in his respect for stewardship of our earth. He is active in his church, where he has participated in mission trips that to Boston, Camden and Philadelphia to work in inner-city areas.Jordan is a dynamic student with an eclectic group of friends. He plays soccer and sings with the Night Choir. He participates in the FFA and DJs for school dances. He loves Envirothon, but wants to pursue communications or English in the future. He is awaiting word from Marist and Gettysburg colleges about where that will happen, but in the meantime, David Moran, the Envirothon coach, encourages anyone in the community to engage Jordan in ecological discussion so he can keep his skills sharp for this spring’s competitions.— Ian StreverAssistant Principal
