Housatonic Valley Regional High School student of the week: Nate Brooks

The Lakeville Journal congratulates the honorees of the student of the week program at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. FALLS VILLAGE — John F. Kennedy once said, “History is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing into the future. To try to hold fast is to be swept aside.” Nate Brooks, our student of the week at Housatonic Valley Regional High School (where he is a member of the senior class), developed a similar respect for history as a student in Douglas Murray’s history class at North Canaan Elementary School and during his time with Deron Bayer and Peter Vermilyea at Housatonic. Rather than a series of dots along a line, Nate now sees history as a “flowing continuation” that impacts our world in very relevant ways.Nate’s respect for history inclines him toward a career as a teacher of it, and he is currently awaiting word from several admissions offices in the Northeast about where he will pursue this dream next fall. In the meantime, he applies his academic acumen to several pursuits that prioritize his brand of precise, logical thinking. In addition to his independent study of Latin with Marge Becker, Nate enjoys the competitive edge of activities such as Envirothon and the FFA Nursery Landscape Team, both of which have enjoyed success on a national level. As Nate puts it, they are “my sport,” where he employs surgical precision to memorize facts, apply concepts and strategize.Nate enjoys the overlap among all of these areas. He can instantly recall plant names in both English and Latin, and he appreciates the coincidence of language, history, and science that gives birth to those names. We at Housatonic are equally appreciative of the circumstances that landed Nate in our building, where he adds to the unique character of our student body.

Today, AMP stands as a fully realized arts destination, home to the world’s largest indoor collaborative artwork and a thriving hub for community engagement. Wynn’s departure, marked by her final day Oct. 31, closes a significant chapter in the organization’s evolution. Staff and supporters gathered the afternoon before to celebrate her tenure with stories, laughter and warm tributes.
