Housy girls tennis wins one, loses two

The Housatonic Valley Regional High School girls tennis team won a match at Thomaston, 3-2, Friday, May 8.

No. 1 singles: Trudi Ruiz (T) defeated Sabina Busby, 8-1.

No. 2 singles: Nora Kalosky (T) defeated Audrey Allyn, 8-4.

No. 3 singles: Camilla Busby (H) defeated Kayla Fitzgerald, 8-4.

No. 1 doubles: Kayla Robinson and Kathleen Rogers (H) defeated Allie Mauro and Emily Yaffe, 8-6.

No. 2 doubles: Chelsea Burns and Rebekah Borgert (H) defeated Allysa Patenaude and Hannah Russo, 8-3.

On Monday, May 11, Nonnewaug and Housatonic played two matches. Nonnewaug ended up winning both, but the individual sets were a lot closer than the final scores indicated, with several long rallies and deuce games.

In the first match, Nonnewaug defeated Housatonic, 4-1.

No. 1 singles: Sivani Jonnalagadda (N) defeated Sabina Busby, 8-2.

No. 2 singles: Abby Ayre (N) defeated Audrey Allyn, 9-7.

No. 3 singles: Hailey Brent (N) defeated Camilla Busby, 8-4.

No. 1 doubles: Kayla Robinson and Kathleen Rogers (H) defeated Hannah Levy and Cytlally Gibson, 8-3.

No. 2 doubles: Gabby Gibson and Lauren Villanova (N) defeated Genevieve Terrall and Laurel Woodruff, 8-4.

In the second match, Nonnewaug also won 4-1.

No. 1 singles: Sivani Jonnalagadda (N) defeated Sabina Busby, 8-1.

No. 2 singles: Abby Ayre (N) defeated Audrey Allyn, 8-4.

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
