Ice cream social at Historical Society

COLEBROOK — The Colebrook Historical Society hosted an ice cream social at the Rock School House on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Carol Lord, one of the three co-presidents of the historical society, said the social has been held annually for three years.

“It was started after the renovation of the Rock School House was mostly completed,” co-president Jan Rathbun said. “As with any great restoration, it’s still a work in progress. We plan on making the small room off the side of the school house into an old post office.”

The building is said to be the only colonial schoolhouse in Connecticut that was never modernized. It was in use until 1911.

“With the help of Bob Grigg, town historian and historical society board member, third- graders from the Colebrook Consolidated School come each year for a whole day to experience what it would’ve been like,” Lord said. “This includes not having electricity or running water. The students and the teachers dress up, and they run the flag up the flagpole.

“The stove in the schoolhouse is now working, so hopefully we’ll soon be able to light it for winter activities,” co-president Julie Andresen said.
