J. Evelyn O'Brien

WINSTED — J. Evelyn O’Brien, 97, of Meadow Street, died Aug. 17, 2009, at Paradym Health Care in Torrington.

Born Jan. 15, 1912, in Astoria, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Anna Hartman (Seitz) and Thomas P. O’Brien. She had lived in Winsted for the past 80 years.

Prior to her retirement, she had worked for the Gilbert Clock Shop, the state of Connecticut’s Department of Social Services and was a librarian at the Beardsley & Memorial Library for 10 years. She attended local schools, was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, an avid reader, an accomplished artist in oil and landscapes and loved knitting and sewing.

Her survivors include three sisters, Anna Harding, Elizabeth Cornelio and Margaret Riiska, all of Winsted; a brother, Robert W. O’Brien of Bethel Park, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, John, Thomas, Vincent and Joseph A. O’Brien; and three sisters, Alice O’Brien, Mary Centrella and Theresa Hayes.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 21, 11 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Church, Winsted. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s New Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Beardsley & Memorial Library, Munro Place, Winsted, CT 06098, or to St. Anthony School, in care of St. Joseph Church PO Box 808, Winsted, CT 06098.
