James F. Dolan

LAKEVILLE — James Francis Dolan, 80, died April 19, 2010, at the Jupiter Medical Center after succumbing to a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita (Hughes) Dolan. A longtime resident of Jupiter Island, Fla., Mr. Dolan also maintained a home in Lakeville.

Mr. Dolan was born in Orange, N.J., on Jan. 5, 1930, one of three children.

Mr. Dolan was a long -time partner and head of the trusts and estates department at Davis Polk.

After graduating from Seton Hall College in New Jersey and Columbia Law School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where, as a lieutenant, he served as the chief legal officer aboard the USS Intrepid.

Shortly after his tenure with the Navy, Mr. Dolan joined Davis Polk. While there, he advised his clients on complex estate and tax matters. After his retirement from Davis Polk he continued to serve his clients until days before his death.

Mr. Dolan worked closely with Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York and was a board member of J.P. Morgan Florida. Throughout his career he served on dozens of boards, representing diverse businesses and charitable foundations.

As an avid and savvy golfer, Mr. Dolan was a member of several golf clubs, including Jupiter Island Club and Seminole Golf Club in Florida and Muirfield in Scotland.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Dolan is survived by four sons, James, Stephen and his wife, Margaret, Michael and Richard and his wife, Amanda; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Lakeville at a future date.
