Jane (Tyrrel) Keur

SALISBURY — Jane (Tyrrel) Keur, 89, of Windham Falls in Groton, Conn., died unexpectedly Nov. 19, 2010, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.

Jane was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Guilford to Grace (Suydam) and Randolph E. Tyrrel. She grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Guilford. She married Willem E. “Wim� Keur on Dec. 19, 1944, in Salisbury. They lived at Salisbury School for 30 years and retired in Lakeville. Wim died in 1993.

Jane attended schools in Brooklyn, graduating from Packer Collegiate Institute. She worked as a teacher at Town Hill School in Lakeville and enjoyed her many years as a faculty wife at Salisbury School. She had many wonderful memories of the “Salisbury boys.�

She enjoyed quilting, knitting, sewing and reading. In her last few years, she had been knitting baby hats and donating them through RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program).

Jane embraced life and always had fun, bringing a positive attitude and laughter to almost every situation. She enjoyed people and treasured her many friends. Jane will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her son, Link Keur and his wife, Beverly, of Augusta, N.J.; her daughter, Judy Toth and her husband, Barry, of Gales Ferry, Conn.; seven grandchildren of whom she was very proud and who dearly loved their “Omoe,� Adrienne (Keur) McBrien, Tyler Keur, Amy (Toth) Vaughan, Bryan Toth, Alison (Toth) Powers, Ryan Keur and Randall Keur; two great-grandchildren; her brother, Donald Tyrrel; and many beloved nephews and a niece.

Donations may be made to the Salisbury School Development Office (Salisbury, CT 06068) and designated for a memorial fund in memory of Jane and Wim Keur.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
