John Gordon Dell

SALISBURY — John Gordon Dell, 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 5, 2011.John was born in Berkhamstead, England, on June 14, 1921, to Phyllis (Bedford) and Cyril Dell. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1939 and served seven years as a flight engineer in the United Kingdom and western Canada. After the war he lived in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and worked at Standard Motor Cars and Vans. John married Myra McCarthy in Toronto in 1949 and they immigrated to Sharon in 1954. John managed White Hollow Game Farm there for nearly 50 years.He was an avid outdoorsman who raised Labrador retrievers for hunting and field trials. A true Brit, he was a renowned lifelong gardener, both in Sharon and during retirement in Salisbury.In addition to his wife of 62 years, John is survived by his children, Richard Dell and his wife, Gail, of Salisbury, Catherine Dunham and her husband, Phil, of East Canaan, Stephen Dell of Salisbury, Patricia Walsh of Lake-ville, Maureen Dell of Sharon and Sterling Dell of Salisbury; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his nieces, Nicky McSwain of Okeana, Ohio, and Judy Jacobs of Falls Village; a nephew, Rob Daalhuyzen of West Cornwall; and relatives in Canada, England and South Africa.He was predeceased by his son, Scott, in 1995; and his grandson, Dana Dunham, in 2007. Services and burial will be private. The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association, 30A Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
