Joseph Stephen Cser Jr.

WARREN ­— Joseph Stephen Cser Jr., 71, of Oakdale, Calif., and formerly of Warren, Conn., died suddenly on July 30, 2007.

Mr. Cser was born Oct. 15, 1935, at Fort Jay, Governor’s Island, N.Y., and was the son of the late Elsie (Bowker) and Joseph Cser.

He attended Harwinton Elementary School and Torrington High School and was a master sergeant in Company H, 169th Infantry Regiment, 43rd Infantry Division of the National Guard.

He worked as an engineer for the state of Connecticut and owned his own woodworking shop, Pinnacle Craft Shop, where he made furniture. He was also a land surveyor and was a scuba diver for the Winsted Skin Divers Club.

He is survived by his former wife, Margaret J. Cser of Southfield, Mass.; two daughters, Barbara L. Hartz and her husband, Eugene, of Gastonia, N.C., and Linda C. King and her husband, Thomas, also of Southfield; four grandchildren, Christina and Paul Hartz of Gastonia, and Sierra and Karisa King of Southfield; two sisters, Aleeta Slattery of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and Rosalyn Berkovich of Spokane, Wash.; and two brothers, Spencer Cser of Ione, Calif., and Gary Cser of Fayetteville, N.C. Services will be private.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
